Cyclone Winston -- the most powerful cyclone ever to have hit the Southern Hemisphere -- slammed into the island nation of Fiji on February 19th, 2016.
It also hit close to home for us Assumption Sisters in the USA. Our novice, Sr. Akeneta, is Fijian. Only now, more than a week after Winston struck, is the extent of the damage to her homeland becoming more clear. Communication is slowly being restored and she is now able to gather information about her family and loved ones.
Sr. Ake's village of Vuna, on the island of Taveuni, was flattened by ferocious cyclone winds and the strength of the waves that battered the shoreline.
Hardly any houses left standing in Vuna
If you would like to reach out and help Fiji rebuild, aid may be coursed through Catholic Relief Services or the Fiji Red Cross.
If you would like to help Sr. Akeneta's village directly, donations will gratefully accepted and sent directly to those in need. Please click here for online donations. For checks: please make payable to Religious of the Assumption and send to 11 Old English Road, Worcester, MA 01609.
Thank you for praying for the people of Fiji and for extending any help that you can. May the Lord bless you for your kindness to Sr. Ake and her people in their hour of distress.
