Alumnae of Class 1976 of the Academy of the Assumption in Miami, Florida held their 30th Jubilee Reunion last October 6th and 7th, 2006.
The reunion weekend began with a gathering at Yleana Noas residence. Story-telling and reminiscing were the order of the day. Around 40 alumnae gathered for this evening.
Saturday evening, October 7th, more than 70 alumnae with their spouses and families and friends attended the Jubilee Mass at St. Jude Church, the former Assumption chapel. Rev. Gabriel N. Ghanoum, Pastor, celebrated the Mass. A choir of alumnae provided the music.
After the Mass, remarks by Geman Pion (Assumption student, 1969-1976), Sr. Therese Margaret Duross, R.A. (Assumption Principal, 1973-1976) and Ms. Susan Peabody (Assumption Teacher, 1971 1976) were made.
Gema Pinon read the letter that Sr. Mary Ann, Provincial of the Assumption Sisters in the U.S., had addressed to her and all the alumnae.
Sr. Therese Margaret then spoke about the sadness of the closing of the school in 1976 and the present joy of this reunion . "Those who sow in tears one day will reap in joy." She said that the spirit of Mother Marie Eugenie and the principles of Assumption education had taken root in the alumnae, and had seemed to go underground in one sense, but had become an underground stream which was watering the soil and was now re-appearing on the surface and giving joy to all.
Sue Peabody continued by sharing her memories of life before and after the Assumption Sisters left Miami.
A reception followed at a Nicaraguan restaurant. What a joyous evening! No speeches but much mixing and snapping of photos plus requests for prayers for personal intentions and the promise to stay connected.
We certainly hope that will happen!
