An Award for Sr. Tere!

Our own Sr. Maria Teresa Tellez, RA (or Tere to us) received the award for Outstanding Part-Time Faculty for Adult Basic Education from the Doa Ana Community College of New Mexico State University. Congratulations, Sr. Tere!

Ms. Sylvia Duran Nickerson, Dean of the Adult Education Department of Doa Ana Community College, gave the following introduction before presenting her with the award.

"This instructor began her journey in Adult Education as an English as a Second Language (ESL) tutor who worked with students individually and in small group settings. Because of her commitment to her students and dedication to Adult Education, she was hired in the fall of 2003 as an ESL instructor.

This instructor's service to students has spanned over thirty years and has touched the lives of hundreds of students from Guatemala to rural New Mexico. Her passion for teaching and commitment to Adult Education is reflected in her students. She has motivated her students to excel by engaging them in challenging and rewarding activities.

Every semester, this instructor's students are involved in projects which involve and impact their surrounding communities. Her students have participated in voter registration, school board meetings, health fairs, job fairs, citizenship trainings, and numerous fieldtrips including a community meeting with New Mexico Senator Jeff Bingaman, and "Colonias Day" in Santa Fe. In addition to outstanding teaching and leadership, she continues to volunteer her services in her community.

This instructor is an exemplary Adult Basic Education (ABE) instructor whose central focus is her students and their well-being. She is a very important and valuable instructor in the ABE division, is committed to the mission of Adult Education and does an outstanding job. She is very well liked and respected by her peers, is dependable and hard working, and we are very fortunate to have her on our team!

Sr. Tere is a native of Mexico and lived for most of her religious life in Guatemala, in the Province of Central America. In 2001 she came to the US Province where she has been living and serving in the community of Chaparral, New Mexico. Enhorabuena, Sr. Tere!
