Kate O'Neill Library Opens

Yes, our Assumption Center has a new venture! October 19th saw the launch of the Kate O'Neill library -- a lending library of spiritual books. Thanks to the generosity of lots of people, we now have more than 500 books for browsing and borrowing. Our books are varied...prayer and spirituality, the saints, women's spirituality, peace and justice, and the spirituality of aging. Plus we have an excellent collection of the works of Thomas Merton and Henri Nouwen.

The library is named after Catherine ("Kate") O'Neill, hailing from County Limerick in Ireland, who founded the Religious of the Assumption in 1839 with St. Marie Eugenie. Taking the religious name Sr. Therese Emmanuel, she was the first Novice Mistress of the congregation and formed so many of our early Sisters. The story of how she met St. Marie Eugenie is a story for another telling!

Soon there will be two pictures on the library wall -- one of St. Marie Eugenie and the other of Kate O'Neill. Carrie Nixon, a member of the Assumption College faculty, has graciously offered to paint her portrait for our library.

The library is open Tuesdays and Fridays, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. If you're interested in feeding your soul, nourishing your mind, and letting your spirit be renewed and refreshed, come, browse and borrow! (Advent books are now available.)
