Five new Associate Missionaries of the Assumption (AMAs) were commissioned at the 6:00 p.m. celebration of the Eucharist at the Assumption College Chapel last Sunday, August 19th, 2007. In the presence of the Assumption community of Sisters and Brothers and their families and friends, the new volunteers were sent off to their mission sites to begin a year of service to the immigrant community at the U.S.-Mexico border and to the children and young adults of Arusha and Moshi, Tanzania.
Joining the five is a sixth AMA from France, Pierre Tardivo, who will begin his year of service in Worcester, Massachusetts next month.
The five new AMAs are:
Tim Marquis (from Newburgh, New York), a graduate of Siena College. He will work with the Assumptionists in Arusha, Tanzania.
Mary Kay McDermott (from Dubuque, Iowa), a graduate of Lorus College. She will work with the Assumption Sisters in Moshi, Tanzania.
Katy O'Brien (from Green Bay, Wisconsin), a graduate of St. Olaf College in Minnesota. She will work with the Assumption Sisters at Casa Maria Eugenia in Chaparral, Nex Mexico.
Kristen Penkala (from Cumberland, Rhode Island), an Assumption College graduate, will be working with Katy and the Assumption Sisters among the immigrants of Chaparral, New Mexico.
Peter Yoches (from Peoria, Illinois) a graduate of the University of Notre Dame. He will be working with Mary Kay and the Assumption Sisters in Moshi, Tanzania.
The Mass of Commissioning followed a three day Orientation Seminar.
