Every summer at around this time "camp time" begins for our community in Chaparral, New Mexico.
Casa Maria Eugenia sponsors a summer camp which runs for four weeks from mid-June to mid-July . It is held in the community park and is open to everyone in Chaparral. From 9:30am - 12:30pm about 80 to 100 children, aged 5 to 12, play board games, do arts and crafts, share stories, and have sports (soccer is a favorite!) and outside fun with the help of local counselors and groups coming from Mexico and other parts of the USA. The camp is very popular and the number of participants keeps growing.
Just last week we held three afternoons of intense preparation with the camp counselors, local teenagers who commit this time of their vacation to help the younger children have a healthy and wholesome fun time.
Yesterday, June 6th, we received a group of volunteers from the University of Pennsylvania who will help animate the camp for the first week. Each succeding week will bring a new group from Philadelphia, PA (St. Joseph Prep and Camden), Worcester, MA (St. Joan of Arc Church), and Mexico (Assumption High School). Every group brings its unique gifts and talents and lots and lots of energy and enthusiasm! Through these exchanges hearts and minds are opened and lasting friendships are sealed.
Welcome, summer! "Si, Podemos!"
